Privacy
In short: FuelWatchNI has no accounts, no cookies and no tracking. The only thing we keep that could identify you is your IP address in our server logs, and those are deleted after 14 days. The rest of this page explains each part.

No accounts, cookies, adverts or analytics
FuelWatchNI has no sign-in and sets no cookies. It uses no advertising or analytics services, and the page loads no fonts, scripts or images from other companies.
What your browser keeps
- Appearance: if you choose Light or Dark, that choice is saved in your browser’s local storage so the site looks the same next time. Choosing System removes it. Nothing is saved for the default.
- Welcome screen: a note that you have seen the welcome screen is kept in your browser’s session storage, so it is shown once per tab. Your browser deletes it when you close the tab. (Only while the welcome screen is set to show once per session.)
Nothing else is saved in your browser: not your searches, not your location.
Your location
When you tap “Use my location”, your browser asks your permission. If you allow it, FuelWatchNI reads your position once for that search. It does not track you or keep checking where you are. Whether your browser remembers that permission for next time is your browser’s setting; FuelWatchNI never keeps your position.
- Your position, rounded to about 10 metres, is sent to our server with that one search so it can work out road distances to nearby stations. Our server works out the distances itself; your position is not sent to any other company.
- The app does not store it: not in your browser, not in the page address, not in your history.
- The program that answers searches has its request logging switched off, so the position is not written to its logs.
- Our routing service is set to record warnings only, not individual requests.
Your searches
The place, postcode or station name you type is sent to our server to find stations. It is handled the same way as your location: it is used to answer that search and is not written to the search program’s logs.
While you type in the place box, the letters typed so far are sent to our server so it can suggest matching places and roads. They are handled the same way: used to answer, not written to the search program’s logs, and not kept.
Server logs
Like most websites, our web server (nginx) keeps technical access logs. For each request they record your IP address, the date and time, the request method, the page path, the response status and the response size. They do not record the part of the address that carries your search or your location.
If a request fails inside the web server, its error log can record the full request, which can include search text or a rounded location.
Access and error logs are kept for 14 days and are then deleted automatically. Only the person who runs FuelWatchNI can read them, and they are not shared with anyone.
The server also uses your IP address briefly in memory to limit how many requests one connection can make.
Price feedback
When you answer “Price right?” with Yes or No, we save your answer with the station, the fuel, the price we showed, the time and which data update you were looking at. Nothing that identifies you is saved with it: no IP address, no browser details and no free text. (Like every visit, the request itself appears in the server logs for 14 days. See “Server logs” above.)
If you answer No, we show a link to the Fuel Finder service’s own page, where you can report the price yourself. We do not pass your answer, or anything about you, to Fuel Finder.
Directions
The map button opens the station in Apple Maps or Google Maps (whichever suits your device). We pass them the station’s location only, not yours. From then on that company’s privacy policy applies.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of any personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it, delete it, limit how we use it or stop using it.
Because FuelWatchNI has no accounts, and price feedback is stored without anything that identifies you, the only personal information we hold is your IP address in the server logs, for up to 14 days.
To make a request, email privacy@fuelwatchni.co.uk. To find your entries we will need the IP address you used and roughly when you used the site. We will reply within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or 0303 123 1113. We would welcome the chance to put things right first.
